At Anchor, Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas

A quick photographic update. We (Smartini and Turtle E. Awesome) arrived at Green Turtle Cay, Abacos, Bahamas, yesterday afternoon and are anchored just outside of New Plymouth.

(I tried to post this yesterday, so the description is a day behind.)

  1. Looks like a Beautiful place to celebrate Christmas. I hope your crossing went well? Lost track of you a bit, I thought you had work to get done in Titusville, then were going to someplace just south of here to have more work done? Vero or Ft. Lauderdale? Than making the crossing. I guess you got all other work done and all is moving along with your adventure?!!!!! Looking forward to pictures, and more on where you are anchored, movements, interesting events, etc.

    By the way, the Smartini looks incredible!!!

      The crossing (Lake Worth to West End) was pretty easy. A little rolly, but not bad. (2 – 3, 5 seconds). The next two days, from West End to Green Turtle, were flat calm, with just enough breeze to cool us off. We got the work finished in Titusville, then were in a yard in Fort Pierce for 8 days, and then we went down to Lake Worth for the crossing. We come back to Fort Pierce on the 29th – still have some more work to do there, then to Ft. Lauderdale for yet some more work, and then finally, we should be ready to come back to the Bahamas and really get this Adventure started.

    2. Gotcha. I missed the 8 days in Ft. Pierce where you were getting work done, I thought you still had that to do. I wonder how you crossed from West End to Green Turtle? Take the “north” route above Grand across the Bahama Bank? Or did you take the deeper “South” route around the south end of Grand and then east to Green Turtle? I hope and assume no boat, motor, generator, or other issues so far?

      Would love to see pix and hear about all the “little” coves, places where you anchor, beautiful sites, etc.

      There’s a great book called The Cruising Guide to Abaco, Bahamas, by Steve Dodge. It’s full of charts of the entire Abacos, and includes routes to get all over them with at least 6′ of water at Mean Low Tide (which is great, because Smartini draws 6′.) From West End, we go to Mangrove Cay, then around the southern tip of Great Sale, and then several more waypoints get us to Green Turtle. I can’t imagine trying to get around here without this book, or one like it. Andy Noel told us about it – so you know it’s excellent!

      I’m going to write up a long post about this whole trip – keep an eye out for it.

  2. This is a wonderful picture of The Smartini. Such beautiful blue skies and lots of sunshine. Warren, Deanna, Bill, Turid and I had a fun Christmas Eve celebration at Portland Seafood Company in Portland. Great Halibut dinner! Enjoy your Christmas Day tomorrow!! I recently heard about the book through some posts about cruising, doing the great loop, cruising the Bahamas, so I bought an older version, 2009 I think as most everybody said there wasn’t much difference between the years. I have scanned it and just wondered which way you went. Looking forward to your next post!
